AquaSquirts - An impressive recruitment tool for synchronized swimming programs

AquaSquirts is an impressive recruitment tool for synchro clubs was the message that Laurie Wachs, Head Coach of the Saskatoon Aqualenes, presented at Synchro Canada's Fall Workshop in 2006. Proof was in the pool at the Espoir event in May as two swimmers from the 1999 Saskatoon AquaSquirts pilot competed at the national level. Both Brittany and Paige were just 5 years old when they were first introduced to synchro through an AquaSquirts program offered by the club.

Laurie says, “This is exciting as it proves the system works. AquaSquirts hooks swimmers into our sport, building basic swim and synchro skills. These swimmers then easily transition into competitive synchro. Our club promotes High Performance so my fear was that starting swimmers at this young age would lead to shorter synchro careers. I worried they would lose interest by the time they were ready for the national stream. Brittany and Paige have proved that starting out young in "Fun/Skill" based programs actually inspires love and passion for our wonderful sport of synchronized swimming.”

The Aqualenes are not the only club in Canada who has successfully recruited new swimmers to their club through the AquaSquirts program. Kitchener-Waterloo Synchro has seen tremendous growth since they began offering AquaSquirts. Former head coach Staci Bartlett says, “We've been using the AquaSquirts program for several years now, and it's been great! AquaSquirts allows us to provide interesting programming, beginning at a very young age. Since starting the program we've tripled the number of swimmers in our under-8 age group”.

Even parents are raving about AquaSquirts and its ability to hook children into synchronized swimming. Kelly Lynch of Quispamsis, NB says, “Over the years my daughter has tried a number of different sports programs, but swimming has really been the only one that captured her interest. I heard about AquaSquirts and how it incorporates different aquatic sports using imagination and creative themes so I thought it might be something that Emma would enjoy. She completed one AquaSquirts session and absolutely loved it so I signed her up for the junior recreational synchro program at Surf City Synchro last year and again this fall. She loves synchro and her swimming skills have really improved. I highly recommend AquaSquirts.”
